In January, the Department of Health and Human Services awarded a four-year, $102.6 million contract to BioCryst to develop its peramivir influenza treatment for potential use in national stockpiles. Peramivir acts by blocking the enzyme neuraminidase, which the influenza virus uses to spread. Later in the month, BioCryst started a mid-stage clinical trial to test an intramuscular formulation of the drug.
Under the collaboration agreement, Scolr will contribute its Controlled Delivery Technology platform to try to develop a form of peramivir that can be taken by mouth and makes the drug readily available to the body.
If development of the new form is successful, Scolr and BioCryst will enter a licensing agreement for the potential sale of oral peramivir.
