Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Thursday its subsidiary Barr Laboratories Inc. received tentative Food and Drug Administration approval for a generic version of Kytril.

The branded drug is made by Roche Laboratories Inc. and is aimed at treating side effects from cancer therapy, including nausea and vomiting. Barr said it anticipates final approval after Roche's patent expires on Dec. 29, or June 29, 2008 if Roche is given pediatric exclusivity.

The drug registered sales of $90 million for the 12 months ended in November, according to industry data.
