EpiCept Corp. said Tuesday it will license a pain-treatment drug patent to Durect Corp. for $1 million upfront and up to $9 million more in milestone payments.

Cupertino-based Durect will receive exclusive, worldwide rights to certain Tarrytown, N.Y.-based EpiCept  intellectual property for the transdermal patch that contains pain reliever bupivacaine.

EpiCept could also receive royalty payments on future product sales.

In November, Durect signed a $202 million collaboration agreement with Denmark-based Nycomed plc to jointly develop a postoperative pain relief product.
