Geron To Start Clinical Trial on Cancer Treatment

Biotech drug developer Geron Corp. plans to start human clinical trials on an experimental cancer treatment that attacks the stem cells thought responsible for relapses.

Lab tests suggest that the company's GRN163L drug candidate acts against multiple myeloma, or cancer of the plasma cells that produce antibodies for the immune system. The company plans to begin a clinical trial on the drug in the first half of 2007.

Data suggests that the compound interferes with replication of cancer stem cells from three independent multiple myeloma cell lines.
