BioTime Starts Phase II Trial in Japan

BioTime Inc. has started a Phase II clinical trial of its Hextend blood plasma product in Japan.
The Emeryville company sells blood replacement products and solutions used in organ preservation and transplantation. Hextend is a blood plasma volume expander used in surgery. It is sold in the United States and Canada by Hospira Inc. and in South Korea by CJ Corp. under licenses from BioTime. In Japan, the product is being developed and tested by Summit Pharmaceuticals International Corp. and Maruishi Pharmaceutical Co.
A Phase III trial is planned for 2008.
