Genzyme Corp. said Monday it started a mid-stage study on its leukemia treatment candidate Clolar. The drug is aimed at treating acute myelogenous leukemia in previously untreated, older patients. The condition is a malignant disease of the bone marrow. The drug is already approved to treat refractory leukemia in patients between the ages of 1 and 21 after they've received two prior treatments.
The Phase II clinical trial involves 109 patients at 30 sites in the U.S., who are 60 years of age or older and have at least one of a series of factors associated with their condition. Those factors can include a prior blood disorder and poor health.
Genzyme is also in the midst of a Phase III clinical trial on the drug to test its effectiveness in treating leukemia in older patients who received prior treatment with one, but not two, regimens.
