Emisphere, a Tarrytown, NY-based biotech firm said its oral insulin candidate met safety goals for three different dosing ranges. It only met efficacy goals for one dosing range of the Phase II clinical trial.
In each of three dose ranges, 35 patients received the oral insulin and 35 received a placebo. Patients given 10-milligram QID doses experienced statistically significant results, while patients given 5 mg QID and 10 mg BID doses did not.
There were no hypoglycemic episodes observed in any of the patients and no changes in weight were observed, the company said.
The company said it believes the trial results will help it partner with a major pharmaceutical company for further development.
