Drug maker Merck & Co. said Friday it will not file a marketing application with the Food and Drug Administration in 2007 for one of the two combination cholesterol treatments proposed in December because it is still working to develop the formulation.
In December, Merck announced plans it would develop combination products that raised "good" cholesterol while lowering "bad" cholesterol and file marketing applications for both in 2007. One of the drugs, designated MK-0524A, will combine extended-release niacin with an anti-inflammatory drug, and the other, designated MK-0524B, will combine these compounds with its cholesterol drug Zocor.
Merck said it still plans to file a marketing application for MK-0524A with the FDA in 2007, but no longer plans to file an application for MK-0524B in that year.
The company did not offer an alternative filing date, saying it was still trying to develop a fixed-dose combination formulation of MK-0524B.
