Wyeth, Progenics Start Constipation Study

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a unit of Wyeth, and Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc. on Tuesday said they started a mid-stage trial to select the proper dosage for an opioid-induced constipation treatment.

The companies said the trial is designed to find the best dose or doses of oral methylnaltrexone to bring into a decisive late stage clinical trial to treat constipation brought about by the use of opioid-based painkillers, such as morphine.

The primary endpoint of the current Phase II study will compare the number of bowel movements of patients taking methylnaltrexone versus placebo.

The companies expect the study to take less than a year, and begin Phase III, or late-stage, studies in 2007. Under the schedule, they plan to submit a marketing application for oral methylnaltrexone in late 2008 or early 2009.
