Schering AG Boosts 2006 Outlook

German drugmaker Schering AG, which is being acquired by Bayer AG for about $21.3 billion, raised its fiscal 2006 outlook on Tuesday, after posting strong results for the first half of the year.

For fiscal 2006, Schering said it forecasts organic sales growth in the high single-digit range, driven by sales of its top-selling multiple sclerosis drug Betaferon and continued strong double-digit sales growth of its Yasmin oral contraceptive.

In the first half of the year, Betaferon sales increased by 17 percent to $608.3 million, while Yasmin sales increased 33 percent to  $443.9 million.

The company also said sales of its intrauterine delivery system, Mirena, rose 26 percent and oncology business sales gained 14 percent in the first six months of 2006.

By region, sales improved 9 percent in Europe and surged 24 percent in the Latin America/Canada marketplace. U.S. sales grew 14 percent and Asia/Pacific region revenue were up 20 percent during the period.
