FDA Expands Approval for Allergan's Lumigan

Drug maker Allergan Inc. said Friday the Food and Drug Administration has approved its once-daily prescription eye drop Lumigan as a first-line treatment for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which is associated with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

The FDA approved Lumigan in 2001 as an IOP-lowering medication for second-line use.

Elevated IOP represents a major risk factor for vision loss associated with open-angle glaucoma, which currently affects about 3 million people in the United States and is a leading cause of preventable blindness.
