Swiss drug maker Novartis AG said a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended the approval of its drug Exelon for the treatment of dementia associated with Parkinson's disease. The drug is currently approved to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
If approved, the company said Exelon would be the first and only medication available for the treatment of dementia associated with Parkinson's, a chronic and progressive disease of the nervous system.
Including Exelon, five drugs have been approved to treat Alzheimer's-related dementia.
The European Union and 14 other countries already have approved Exelon to treat dementia associated with Parkinson's.
