GlaxoSmithKline on Monday received European go-ahead for an infant vaccine against rotavirus, in the accelerating battle for control of a global market estimated to be worth more than $1.7 billion by the end of the decade.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved GSK's Rotarix, clearing the way for negotiations with individual European countries about whether they will reimburse for the vaccine and add it to routine vaccination programmes.
Merck received approval this month for its rival Rotateq vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration in the US, and a recommendation last week by the Centres for Disease Control that it would be reimbursable by the government for uninsured and underinsured American children.
