Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc., Tustin, CA, presented data that showed its antibody therapy Tarvacin binds to at least six different families of viruses. The treatment is currently in early stage clinical trials to test the dosing ranges in patients with chronic Hepatitis C infection and with solid cancerous tumors. The company said that data shows Tarvacin binds to HIV 1 and 2 viruses, Influenza A and B viruses, Measles, Respiratory Syncitial Virus, Pichinde virus, and Bovine Viral Diarrhea, which is a surrogate Hepatitis C virus model. The antibody attaches itself to the virus and interferes with the replication process.

Peregrine also said that Tarvacin protected animals given lethal levels of Pichinde virus, which causes Lassa fever, a disease originating from central western Africa characterized by fever, inflammation and muscular pains. Tarvacin is the company's first product under its anti-phospholipid technology. Aminophospholipids are parts of the cell membrane that become exposed as a result of certain viral diseases. The phospholipids envelop the viruses, making them a target for the therapy.
